Have you ever heard of “Awa odori”?Awa Odori is a dance with a history of over 400 years, originating from a prefecture in Japan called Tokushima. Nowadays, it is not only danced in Tokushima but all over Japan and it is one of Japan’s most famous summer dance festivals.
Every July and August, Awa Odori becomes the subject of national attention: when over a million people turn out to the streets of Tokyo to watch or participate in this traditional folk dance.

And a little bit more about Awa Odori:
This is one of many theories but it is said that Awa Odori was born from Bon Odori. What is Bon Odori? Obon is a week-long holiday in Japan where it is believed that the spirits of dead relatives and ancestors return during the summer. Many Japanese people return to their hometowns to pay their respects. In the evenings, festival stalls are set up with a giant stage in the center and there is a dance performed by attendees around this stage called “Bon Odori” meaning Obon dance.

In Tokyo, there are only a few places where you can see Awaodori performances, so we are very proud that Musashi-Koganei, where our hostel is located, has been one of those places since 1979. As our hostel is just about a 6 minute walk away from the event location, it is a good chance to deep dive into knowing Japanese culture through this exciting traditional dance.

Apart from Awa Odori, there are other things worth checking out in Koganei. If you go a little north, you’ll find Koganei Park and the Edo Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.
